Description:

Only a small number of these rifles were manufactured c. 1874-1890. They were meant for long range target shooting at the Creedmoor range on Long Island. The American team beat the Irish team in the famous first match at Creedmoor using in part Remington rifles, and L.L. Hepburn, Remington's mechanical department superintendent, was one of the American team members. This one has the "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION, N.Y." barrel address suggesting it was manufactured pre-1888. It also features a wind gauge globe front sight, "44 S" and the matching serial number on the bottom of the barrel, a smooth forearm with iron cap, the patent markings on the left side of the frame, a long range Vernier peep sight on the upper tang, and a checkered semi-pistol grip buttstock with a grip insert, sight mount on the comb and steel shotgun style buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The refinished barrel retains 85% thinned blue finish with remarked "44 S" caliber marking. 40% original case colors remain on the frame. 95% original blue remains on the breechblock and hammer. The wood is very good with a stabilized crack in the grip area, minor dings and scratches, and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
