Description:

Samuel Colt's Model 1849 "Revolving Pocket Pistol" was one of the most important and widely used 19th century revolvers. Unlike Colt's larger models, this model was primarily meant for use by civilians for self-defense, but they are also known to have been carried as private sidearms by many soldiers during the Civil War. With around 340,000 manufactured in 1850-1873, more '49 Pocket revolvers were sold during the 19th century than any other Colt. This revolver was manufactured in 1853. The barrel has the two-line New York address, the frame has the "COLTS/PATENT" marking, the cylinder has stagecoach scene, and matching full or partial serial numbers are on the frame, barrel, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, wedge, loading lever, and cylinder pin. The partitioned case contains a sealed package of five combustible envelope cartridges, correct early style double face eagle grasping a Colt revolver powder flask marked "COLTS/PATENT," "L" shaped combination tool, brass "COLTS/PATENT" marked bullet mold, Eley Brothers cap tin and balls.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 97% plus original blue finish on the barrel with some dings on the left flat, and 85% on the cylinder with smooth gray patina on the balance, 98% plus original correct muted early style case colors on the frame, and 98% aged darkened original silver plating on both grip straps. The cylinder scene is crisp. The grip is also excellent with some minor handling marks and retaining nearly all of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with minor handling/storage marks and typical high spot wear on the lining. 90% original lacquer remains on the powder flask.
