World War I Era Colt Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol

Manufactured in 1915, this early Colt Government Model pistol falls within multiple serial number blocks shipped in early 1916. These blocks, according to Goddard on p. 259 of "The Government Models: The Development of the Colt Model of 1911", include; 1,550 pistols shipped to the government of France, 100 to Abercrombie & Fitch Co., and 300 shipped to London Armoury Co. The left side of the slide has the standard two-line, two-block patent dates and address, caliber marking on the right, and Government Model marking over the serial number on the right of the frame. Replacement barrel marked "P" with polished chamber hood. Fitted with fixed blade and notch sights, checkered diamond pattern grips, and a two-tone magazine with lanyard loop. Provenance: The Gus Cargile Collection

Rating definitionVery fine, retains 75% plus of the original blue finish with a few scattered patches of cold blue visible over light pitting visible on the slide, some light edge wear, and the back strap having thinned to a smooth brown-grey patina. The grips are excellent with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
