Description:

Developed in 1944, the M1C was the first sniper variant of the Springfield Armory M1 Garand rifle. It was based on the standard semi-automatic rifle fitted with a side mounted Griffin & Howe scope mount issued with either a M81 or later M82 sniper scope. Although effective, the manufacturing process was rather involved, requiring non-heated M1 Springfield receivers to be shipped to Griffin & Howe for the installation and fitting of the G&H designed M1C base and then returned to the armory for complete and final assembly and inspection. They were phased out of production after WWII in favor of the simpler M1D Springfield Armory conversion. Less than 8,000 were completed during WWII with many thousands reissued circa 1951-1953 for the Korean War and later during Vietnam. This receiver was originally manufactured in October 1944 and was rebarreled with a refinished SA barrel marked "1-S-A-10-44". It has the early style locking bar windage and "BATTLE RANGE" elevation drums, very late Springfield bolt, hammer, trigger housing, safety and an early post-war "6535382" marked operating rod. The professionally restored M1C base is secured to the receiver with two-pins and three-screw arrangement and restamped on the underside with matching numbered "3262733". The original M1C Griffin & Howe scope mount is stamped "3347778" on the right with the address on top. It is fitted with a late production M82 Sniper Scope that is numbered "41650" marked with a stock number of "F001-0084688". Fitted with a walnut sock and handguard set it is stamped with a boxed "SA/JLG" and cross-cannon cartouche on the side with a circled "P" stamp in the grip area. The buttstock is fitted with an unmarked (WWII) type leather cheekpiece (screws not installed or included) and a checkered steel buttplate. Included with this rifle is a rare early milled SA marked cone flash hider and green web sling. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine as assembled with 95% of its current gray/green parkerized finish with only minor edge and high spot wear overall with the breech still in the white. The stock and handguards are also in very fine condition with nice clear proof marks showing an nice matching medium brown color overall, mixed with minor handling marks. The G&H scope mount retains 90% of its arsenal type reparkerized finish with some minor pitting on the edges of the scope rings and back side of the mount. The markings are clear and distinct. The scope retains 90% of its original blued finish with clear optics.
