Scarce Documented Eli Whitney First Connecticut State Contract Flintlock Musket with Bayonet

Eli Whitney first Connecticut contract muskets are described on pages 205-207 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II", with this exact musket photographed on page 206. The book states, "Sometime prior to May 1804, Eli Whitney contracted with Captain Nathaniel Terry to furnish 112 muskets with bayonets at $15 each... The muskets were delivered over a six-year period ending in May 1810. Except for their markings, these muskets are generally similar to Whitney's 1798 (Type III) U.S. contract muskets..." Features include a bayonet stud on top, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band, "eagle/NEW HAVEN" marked at the center of the lock, "CONNECTICUT" marked on the side plate. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet, leather sling, and wood tampion. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

ConditionVery good with dark brown patina overall and some light pitting. Stock is also very good with scattered scratches, handling marks, and a repaired crack underneath the belly. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is matching condition of the gun.
