Description:

This short flintlock long gun is pictured and discussed on page 329 of "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II: From the 1790s to the End of the Flintlock Period" by George Moller. In the book he lists it as a Type II Militia Musketoon, and his collection notes referred to it as a "New England Militia Horsemans Carbine circa 1830s." He notes that this "musketoon is attributed to private procurement for use by a member of an unknown state's militia cavalry" and is similar to others that he has placed in this category. It has brass furniture including two pinned barrel bands and a New England style lock screw plate, a brass trigger, an integral blade front sight on the front barrel band, an imported lock with scroll engraving and "WILKES" marking, a "P" on the left at the breech, and a simple sling ring on the bottom of the butt. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine with attractively aged patina on the brass furniture, mostly gray patina on the barrel as well as patches of dark pitting, a reworked replacement lock with mostly silver-gray patina, and general mild wear. The stock is also fine and has some general scrapes and dings, minor flakes, and dark oiled finish. Mechanically fine.
