The front of the gold Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent badge has the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service seal when the agency was part of the U.S. Department of Justice from 1940 to 2003. Established in 1933, the INS was dissolved on March 1, 2003 as part of a major government reorganization effort following the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The INS functions were absorbed into three newly created entities under the newly created Department of Homeland Security. The Chief Patrol Agent was a sector commander who oversaw operations in one state or multiple states depending on the sector size and importance.
