Description:

This musketoon is featured on pages 234 and 237 of "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume III" by George D. Moller, and his initials are stamped at the toe. It was altered from Artillery configuration to resemble a Sappers Musketoon with an added bayonet guide on the right side of the muzzle and added lug on the right rear of the front barrel band. According to Moller, 228 of the 1030 Model 1847 Sappers Musketoons were altered to the Artillery configuration by removing the guide and lug; with this example reverted back to its Sappers configuration. The front barrel band has a brass blade front sight on the upper strap and "W8" marked on top of the rear strap. The barrel tang and lock are dated "1855." The left stock flat is marked with a circled script "WN" cartouche. Includes a brass hilted Sappers & Miners Saber bayonet with a 22 inch leaf shaped blade marked "AMES MFG CO/CHICOPEE/MASS" on one side, "US/ADK/1855" on the other side, and inspector marks "A.D.K./R.H.K.W." and "Q7" on the pommel. Also includes a brass tipped leather scabbard and "US" marked leather sling. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine as modified with bright surfaces, areas of very light pitting, and crisp markings on the lock and barrel. Stock is also fine with a coat of protective oil, raised grain, some light scratches and handling marks, defined edges, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Bayonet is very good with slightly undersized scabbard.
