Description:

Janus Schindler of Brun is listed in "Der Neue Stockel" by Heer as active around 1780. The barrel has eight-groove rifling, a blade front sight, notch rear sight with four folding leaves, "Janus Schindler in Brun" etched among scrolls on top in the breech section, and a floral engraved breech plug. The lock has elaborate Rococo scroll patterns as does the most of the furniture. The trigger guard bow has a group of classic arms and armor. The iron ramrod ferrules have an attractive twist design. The wrist has a slot for a peep sight and a silver escutcheon inscribed with script initials (the first appears to be "G", and the second is "S"). It is equipped with adjustable double set triggers. The stock has a horn forend cap, raised scroll and floral carving, checkering on the wrist, pierced iron scroll inlay on the cheek piece and toe, and a wooden patch box with coordinating fittings. "8" is marked in the patch box compartment in pencil.

Rating Definition:

Very good with half of the refinished brown on the barrel, light gray patina on the remaining metal, some mild pitting, crisp engraving, and general mild wear. The stock is very good and has crisp checkering and carving, a small chip below the hammer, and general mild scrapes and dings. Mechanically fine.
