Fine Engraved W.W. Greener 8 Bore Double Barrel Toplever Hammer Duck Gun

Manufactured in circa 1883. The browned Damascus barrels are each engraved with a band of stylized foliage at the breech end. The concave rib has a large bead front sight, is signed “W.W. GREENER. 68 HAYMARKET LONDON,” and has a doll’s head extension engraved with a shell. The casehardened action has carved percussion fences, and a blued toplever. The water table is stamped with “PATENT No. 3090” (Greener, September 9, 1874) and the Greener “Elephant” trademark. The casehardened rebounding sidelocks have sculpted hammers and are signed “W.W. GREENER”. It has a blued trigger guard and border and scroll engraving throughout. The barrels are struck with Birmingham “Not For Ball” black powder proof marks, Greener “Elephant” trademarks and “WWG”. The figured pistol grip stock has a rubber recoil pad, checkered grip and forearm, a dark horn tip and Deeley & Edge fastener on the forearm, and a large blank silver oval initial escutcheon on the underside of the butt. Stock measurements; 1 3/8 inch drop at comb; 2 1/8 inch drop at heel; 14 1/2 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 15 lbs 5 oz. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

ConditionFine as partially refinished. The barrels display bold Damascus twist patterns, 80% plus of the rebrowned finish, a clear signature, and were perhaps slightly shortened during its working life. The action retaining traces of original casehardened finish, and the locks retain 60% slightly faded original casehardened finish. The toplever retains 30% original blued finish, and the trigger guard has traces of blued finish. The engraving is clear and crisp throughout. The replacement stock and forearm which appears original are also fine and has occasional light handling marks, light edge wear, tiny cracks at the tail of the forearm, and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.
