Exceptionally Fine Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action .45-70 Rifle with Factory Letter

This attractive Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in desirable .45-70 caliber was manufactured in 1888. The barrel is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an "1886" marked ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line New Haven address ahead of the rear sight and "45-70" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-." The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and the serial number. Sling swivels are mounted on the underside of the forend cap and buttstock. The straight grip stock is fitted with a crescent buttplate. The frame has the desirable casehardened finish. The forend cap, hammer, lever and buttplate are also casehardened. The barrel, full length magazine tube and bolt are blued. The loading gate is niter blue. Mounted with nicely figured plain walnut forearm and straight grip stock. The included factory letter confirms the round barrel in .45-70 caliber and plain trigger and states the rifle had its serial number applied on April 5, 1888, and was received in the warehouse on April 11, 1888, and shipped on October 17, 1888, in order 13950.

ConditionExceptionally fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 85% plus original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The bolt retains 95% original blue finish. 85% original niter blue remains on the loading gate. The frame retains 80% original case colors. The remaining metal surfaces retain 60% original case colors. The wood is very fine with an applied coat of protective varnish, some minor dings and scratches overall. Mechanically excellent. A solid example of a casehardened frame Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in desirable .45-70 caliber.
