Description:

Approximately 9,892 Model 1795 muskets were manufactured by Harpers Ferry in the year 1818. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 flintlock muskets are described on pages 62-73 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II", with this exact musket pictured on pages 71 and its lock pictured on page 73. The first picture caption on page 71 states, "Harpers Ferry produced Model 1795 muskets until the introduction of the Model 1816 musket at that armory in 1819. This 1818-dated example has a 42" barrel and the new-style flat-surfaced barrel bands, which were introduced into the production of muskets in 1816." The second picture caption on page 73 states, "A Comparison of this 1818-dated lock with the previously illustrated locks shows that it underwent few visual changes throughout production of the Model 1795 musket. The parallel-sided, round-edged trigger guard was introduced into the production of Harpers Ferry muskets in 1811." The Model 1795 lock is marked with the eagle and shield above "US" at the center and "HARPERS/FERRY/1818" on the tail which has a projecting point. The barrel is of the shorter 42 inch length and has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle. Marked with "eagle/P" and "US" sunken oval proofs at the left of the breech. Brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band, sling swivels on the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard, and a trumpet head ramrod. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet and period leather sling. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Good with scattered light pitting and gray/brown patina. Stock is very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled with some light scratches and dents, some chips in the ramrod channel, a mild gouge on the right of the forend ahead of the rear barrel band, and a chip/crack ahead of the rear lock screw. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is good with brown patina, scattered light pitting, and a crack on the socket, sling is good with some cracking and age related wear.
