Description:

Daniel Henkels Maryland contract muskets are described on pages 216-217 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II" with this exact musket pictured on both pages. The first picture caption states, "This Daniel Henkels musket was delivered under J. Henry's contract with the State of Maryland in the 1814-1815 period. Except for its markings, it is similar to the muskets delivered under Henkels's 1815 U.S. contract. This musket has some features of the Model 1795 (Type IV) Springfield Armory muskets and other features of 1808 U.S. contract muskets delivered by makers in the Maryland-Pennsylvania area." "1814" dated at the tail of the lock and "D. HENKELS" marked in an arch above "PHILa" marked at the center. A raised "P" in a sunken oval marked on the top left of the breech. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a reproduction leather sling. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Good with scattered light mottled brown patina and light pitting with a patch of dings on the barrel. Stock is very good as re-oiled with scattered dents and scratches, a crack above the middle band spring, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw, and cracks on either side of the lock. Mechanically excellent.
