Desirable War of 1812 Era U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1795 Type III Flintlock Musket

This is a Type III Flintlock Musket with a brass blade front sight on the barrel band, a bayonet lug near the muzzle, "US" and "P/Eagle head/V" at the breech, the lock plate dated "1810" and marked with a script "US" over the federal eagle and shield motif above "SPRINGFIELD" in an upward curve, "1810" dated buttplate, sling swivels holding a leather sling, U.S. inspection markings stamped behind the trigger guard tang and "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the stock toe. The Model 1795 is significant as the first official musket of the U.S. military and was widely used in the War of 1812. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating definitionGood. The metal surfaces have a mottled brown-gray patina with pitting throughout. The wood is very good with initials hand marked on flat, stress crack at buttplate toe, minor filled repair on the forearm and minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
