Exceptional Civil War Military Inspected Remington Model 1861 Navy Percussion Revolver

Also known as the "Old Model Navy", Remington produced approximately 7,000 1861 Navy revolvers in 1862. The top barrel flat is marked "PATENTED DEC. 17, 1861/MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS' ILION, N.Y." The matching serial number is marked on the underside of the barrel and left side of the frame under the grip. The grip panels have the matching serial number hand written in pencil on the insides. There is a small "W" inspectors mark on the left side of the barrel and frame and on the cylinder. In addition there is a small "C" on the left side of the frame behind the recoil shield. German silver cone front sight with grooved top strap rear sight. Brass trigger guard with two piece walnut grips with a script "CGC" cartouche on the lower left panel (same cartouche as on the U.S. Henry Martial Rifles). Almost all of the 1861 Navy revolvers went to fill U.S. government orders and to find one in this good of condition is rare. Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection

Rating definitionExceptionally fine. The revolver retains 90% plus of the original bright blue finish on the barrel with thinning on the right side flats. The right side of the loading lever is mostly a brown patina with 30% original bright niter blue finish remaining and the left side retains almost all of the original bright blue finish. The frame is a mix of smooth brownish mottled patina. The cylinder retains 85% original finish with overall light speckling of brown patina. The trigger guard has an even natural attractively aged patina. The grips are also excellent with minor dings and dents and a crisp cartouche. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent.
