This Whitney-Howard hammerless single shot breech loading carbine is also known as the Howard Thunderbolt. It is estimated that less than 2,000 Whitney-Howard rifles, carbines, and shotguns were manufactured in total between 1866-1870, with this example included as one of only less than an estimated 200 carbines manufactured. The serial number is marked on the left side of the lever link. The left side rear of the barrel is marked "CHARLES HOWARD'S PATENTS.OF-SEPT.26.-AND-OCT.10.1865.-AND-MAY.15.1866" and the right side is marked "WHITNEY-ARMS-CO.-WHITNEYVILLE-CONN." Features a dovetailed fixed brass blade front sight and dovetailed fixed notch rear sight, and a walnut straight grip stock with an iron crescent buttplate. According to the consignor, this is one of six known carbines extant. Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection
Very good with smooth gray and brown patina overall and nice markings in the metal. Stock is good with numerous scattered scratches and dents. Mechanically excellent.
