A) Flintlock Horse Pistol

These mid-18th century Continental European pistols are unmarked but feature beautiful coordinating engraving and raised relief carving consisting of mainly floral scroll patterns along with various mask designs inhabiting the patterns on the metal and some geometric accents and borders. The side plates in particular are very attractive and are a heavily pierced design with disgorging masks. The first pistol has "VI" on the bottom right of the barrel, inside the lock mortise, and on the inside of the lock below the mainspring. The second pistol has "VII" on the lock and inside the lock mortise, and an unidentified mark on the bottom right of the barrel at the breech (sort of like a heart with trefoil top).

Rating definitionFine with mottled gray patina, minor oxidation, crisp designs, and mild wear. The stock is also fine and has crisp carving, scattered small dings and scratches, and thin repairs along the pommel tendril on the right. Mechanically fine.
