The legendary Model 1866 forged Winchester's legacy as the leading manufacturer of lever actions, which today still retain the basic form of the '66. This carbine was manufactured in 1871 as a third model with the serial number stamped in block numerals behind the trigger and the distinctive brass receiver has the more moderately curved shape at the rear when compared to the earlier first and second models. The carbine has a front barrel band with an integral front sight, a two leaf rear sight and a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line Winchester New Haven/King's improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with two circles above "1-2" above a third circle along with a couple illegible markings. The purpose of these markings remains unknown. The stock is fitted with a trapdoor brass buttplate (cleaning rod not included).

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel and magazine have a mottled gray patina. The brass has an attractive mellow appearance. The right side plate is slightly raised. The sanded, refinished, slightly undersized wood is also good with a few cracks on the wrist and forearm past the barrel band. There is a partial firing pin, otherwise mechanically functions properly.
