Native American Style Cut-Down, Tack Decorated, and Smooth-Bored English Commercial Pattern 1853 Rifle-Musket with Rawhide Bands

This gun began its life as a Civil War era commercial Pattern 1853 "Enfield" Rifle-Musket that was likely imported during the war and appears to have later been sold to or captured by a Native American in the West and then modified over the years to keep it in use and personalize it for its owner. The lock has "1862/TOWER" at center, and the barrel has "LONDON" and Birmingham proofs. The gun was later cut-down (presumably to make it easier for use on horseback) and a drum and nipple installed in place of the original bolster. The barrel has no sights. The modified stock has a pewter forend tip, a wide rawhide band holding the barrel, another rawhide band on the wrist, a replacement brass buttplate, and series of brass tacks on the left flat and butt. A circular rawhide medallion with a black cross design is tied to the trigger guard. Native Americans used percussion arms well into the late 19th century during the Indian Wars, including at famous battles like the Battle of Little Bighorn.

ConditionFair in overall condition but proudly radiating signs of hard use on the frontier with some cracks and repairs, some absent tacks, and mild oxidation. Mechanically needs work. This "frontier scarred" muzzle loader has clearly seen real use, and could have easily been used in battles of the numerous 19th century Indian Wars.
