Robert McCormick delivered approximately 4,484 of these muskets, patterned after the French Model 1766, to Philadelphia between 1799-1801 against a 1798 U.S. contract originally for 3,000 muskets. "McCORMICK" ahead of the date "1800" marked vertically at the tail of the lock and "V/eagle head/US" at the center. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked "US" (very faint) with a sunken "eagle/P" proof at the left quarter of the breech. "x/V" (x is partial/faint) marked on the left stock flat, a marking used starting circa 1798 on muskets delivered to the Maryland-Pennsylvania area. Fitted with a bayonet stud on top of the barrel towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight fitted to the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivels are fitted to the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard. Small white painted inventory number "CWT-2004-63" on the inside of the trigger guard and on the trigger guard finial. Another example of a McCormick 1798 U.S. contract musket is described and pictured on pages 146-149 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II".

Good with smooth brown patina, some light pitting, moderate flash pitting, and mostly clear lock markings. Frizzen and top jaw on hammer are replacements. Stock is also good as lightly sanded and refinished with scattered scratches, dents, chips, cracks, some undersized spliced and repaired sections on either side of the forend below the barrel line, a re-glued cracked section ahead of the lock, an absent section to the left of the barrel tang, a spliced and repaired section to the right of the barrel tang, and a chip to the left of the buttplate tang. Mechanically fair.
