Outstanding Mexican-American War Era U.S. Simeon North Model 1843 Side Lever Hall Breech Loading Saddle Ring Percussion Carbine Dated 1846

Approximately 10,500 of these "side lever" Hall Model 1843 carbines were manufactured by Simeon North in 1844-1853. The 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons were among the units issued these carbines during the Mexican-American War, and more than half are believed to have been rifled for use in the Civil War, making original smoothbore examples like this scarce. Its western heritage certainly adds to its interest. It has a blade front and V notch rear sight. "U.S./S. NORTH/MIDLtn/CONN./1846" marked breech block. "JH" (Joseph Hannis) inspection initials marked on the right of the breech, boxed script "GWH" (George W. Hamlin) inspection cartouche marked on the left stock flat, and oval script "WAT" (William A. Thornton) inspection cartouche marked on the right stock flat. Single letter "H" inspection initial marked on various components. A brass collection tag marked "FBS16" is hanging from the saddle ring. Provenance: The Donald Bates Collection

ConditionExcellent plus. Retains 95% lustrous original brown finish with a small patch of light surface pitting on top towards the muzzle, and a small patch of dings towards the middle of the barrel. Retains 97% plus vibrant original case colors on the breechblock. Retains 85% plus original bright nitre blue finish on the lever with brown patina on the balance. Sharp markings in the metal overall. Stock is also excellent plus with attractive original raised grain and rich oil finish, some of the most well-defined edges this writer has ever seen on a Hall carbine, some scuffs concentrated on the underside of the stock, and exceptionally crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. This exceptional example of a Hall Model 1843 carbine is the finest example Rock Island Auction Company has cataloged and would be extremely difficult to improve upon and would make an excellent addition to any U.S. Martial arms collection!
