Description:

Gwyn & Campbell manufactured around 8,200 of Type I and Type II carbines in 1863 and 1864 with most issued to a variety of Midwestern units during the Civil War. This one has the standard Type II markings and features. Matching serial numbers are visible on the bottom of the barrel, frame, and breechblock. Boxed script "WHR" inspection cartouche on the left of the wrist, and small "WHR" inspection initials on the top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang. Includes an original Gwyn & Campbell pull through cleaning brush and a brass collection tag marked "FBS41". Provenance: The Donald Bates Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retains 95% plus original blue finish on the barrel with some light loss at the muzzle and breech end. Retains 90% plus original nitre blue finish strongest on the rear sight, breech block and upper tang, with some light flaking on the buttplate. Retains 97% plus vivid original case colors. Stock is also excellent with rich oil finish, defined edges, and a few handling marks concentrated on the toe, and an exceptionally crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. This exceptional example of a Gwyn & Campbell carbine would make a fine addition to any Civil War or U.S. Martial collection!
