Description:

Approximately 8,000 Model 1864 Joslyn breech loading carbines were purchased by the Ordnance Department. The Joslyn was one of the more widely used carbines during the Civil War, with this example appearing to remain in "as issued" condition. It is the finest example Rock Island Auction has seen. The carbine is equipped with pinched blade front and three folding leaf rear sights. It has the correct hooded firing pin that distinguishes the Model 1864 Carbine from the brass mounted Model 1862 carbine. "FDL" inspector initials on the left of the barrel. Matching serial number on the breechblock and upper tang. The buttplate is marked "US". The stock has a crisp boxed script "TWR" inspection cartouche above the saddle ring bar. Provenance: The Donald Bates Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, as issued. Retains 97% plus original blue finish on the barrel with some light thinning to brown patina. Retains 98% plus vivid original case colors on the lock, hammer, breechblock, and sideplate, the front barrel band turned to a smooth gray patina, and strong case colors on the trigger guard and buttplate showing through mottled brown patina. Retains sharp markings in the metal. Stock is also excellent plus with attractive raised grains and rich oil finish, some light scratches and dents, defined edges, and an exceptionally crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. This Joslyn Model 1864 Carbine would be nearly impossible to improve upon and would make an excellent addition to any U.S. Civil War firearms collection!
