Exceptional Indian Wars Era Spencer-Burnside Contract Model 1865 Repeating Saddle Ring Carbine

Most of the Model 1865 Spencer carbines were manufactured in 1865 and 1866 after the end of the Civil War. Many were used during Reconstruction and in the Indian Wars before the Springfield Trapdoors were widely issued. Features blade front and folding ladder rear sights, and the Stabler cutoff. Small single letter inspection initials marked on various components, "J.L.C" (Joseph L. Cottle) inspection initials on the left of the barrel at the breech, boxed script "TWR" (Thomas W. Russell) inspection cartouche on the left of the stock. A brass collection tag marked "FBS24" is hanging from the saddle ring. Includes a period pull through cleaning brush, one Spencer cartridge, and a Spencer combination screwdriver tool. Provenance: The Donald Bates Collection

ConditionExceptionally fine, retains 90% original blue finish with scattered moderate spotting on the barrel. Retains 75% plus original case colors strongest on the action with the balance lightly faded to a smooth gray patina, and some light freckling on the lever. Wood is very fine as re-oiled with defined edges, some dents, a few light scratches, and a nice cartouche. Mechanically excellent. This Spencer-Burnside carbine would make a fine addition to any U.S. Martial collection!
