Description:

Martially inspected Navy Model Percussion revolver manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Co. of Middletown, Connecticut. Of the 20,000 Savage Navy revolvers manufactured between 1861-1865, the Ordnance Department purchased 11,984 of these distinctive revolvers during the Civil War. Features a heart shaped trigger guard with round cocking lever, off-set hammer, six-shot gas-sealing cylinder, octagon barrel and hinged loading lever. The two-piece walnut grips are oil-finished. The barrel, frame and cylinder have a high polished blue finish. The loading lever, trigger guard, cocking piece and hammer are color casehardened. The top of the frame is roll-stamped "SAVAGE R.F.A.Co.MIDDLETOWN. Ct/H.S.NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856/JANUARY 18 1859 MAY 15 1860" in three lines. "H" and "W" ordnance single letter sub-inspection marks on various components. Serial number "13330" on right side grip frame, back of the cylinder, and underneath the barrel. Both grips matching hand numbered underneath. Boxed script "MM" (Miles Moulton) inspection cartouche on the left grip panel. Yellow painted number "101" written on the butt with traces of another yellow painted number next to it.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 60% plus original blue finish with some light scattered flaking, cylinder retains 85% plus original blue finish, and the frame retains 40% original blue finish with smooth brown patina on the balance and some areas of very light surface pitting. The casehardened surfaces have turned mostly to a gray patina with strong traces of muted original case colors visible on the hammer. Grips are also exceptionally fine with attractive original raised grains and rich oil finish, some scattered light scratches, a few small nicks, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
