Exceptional Presentation Cased Civil War Era Massachusetts Arms Co. First Model Maynard Breech Loading Percussion Carbine with Accessories

This pre-Civil War carbine is very similar at first glance to the standard Maynard military carbines manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Co. used by both the North and South during the Civil War, but close inspection shows a number of features are different, including: no rear sight on the barrel, a wheel on the left side for the primer, no sling ring, a high grade walnut stock with a glossier varnished finish, and "724" on the bottom of the barrel and inside of the primer door. It has a German silver blade front sight, "MAYNARD ARMS CO/WASHINGTON" on the right side of the frame, "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" on the left side, "MAYNARD PATENTEE/SEP. 22 1845./MAY 27 1851/JUNE 17 1856" on the patch box door, and a curved buttplate. It comes in a fitted hardwood case with a "MAYNARD ARMS CO./WASHINGTON/M/MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS" marked bullet mold, American Flask & Cap Co. powder flask with green lanyard and second charger spout (one 30 grains and one 40 grains), Mass. Arms Co. primer tin with a few rolls of primers, and a compartment full of brass casings and lead bullets.

ConditionVery fine with 85% plus original blue finish on the barrel, 75% plus original case colors on the frame, mostly gray and brown patina on the patch box lid, bright original blue finish on the edges of the buttplate, gray patina and mild oxidation on the balance, general mild wear consistent with light use and storage, and distinct markings. The stock is also very fine and has attractive figure, minor dings and scratches, and some slight flaking of the varnish. Mechanically excellent. The case is also very fine with moderate age and storage related wear, including some cracks and chips. The bullet mold has some mild oxidation, and the flask lanyard has some loss of the outer layer, but the accessories are fine overall. This is a very attractive set centered on one of the rarest sporting variations of the Maynard rifles and carbines. This same basic design was popular with both Union and Confederate soldiers during the war and successfully bridged the gap between the percussion system and self-contained metallic cartridges.
