Outstanding Civil War Era E. G. Lamson & Co. Palmer Bolt Action Saddle Ring Carbine

The Palmer carbine holds the distinction of being the first metallic cartridge bolt action firearm ever adopted by the U.S. Ordnance Department. The bolt does not contain a firing pin and is simply used to seat the cartridge and seal the breech. It fires with a traditional side lock. Approximately 1,001 of these carbines were ordered by the U.S. government but arrived too late to see action during the Civil War. It has small "M.M" (Miles Moulton) inspector initials on the left of the breech, left stock flat and top of the stock, and a circled script "MM" inspection cartouche on the left stock flat. Includes a rare Palmer combination screwdriver tool and a tampion. Provenance: The Donald Bates Collection

ConditionExcellent plus, as issued. Retains 98% original plum blue finish on the barrel with a nick at the rear. 99% plus vibrant original case colors on the lock, hammer, trigger guard, and buttplate with some light fading on the bolt handle. Wood is also excellent with attractive original raised grain and rich oil finish, defined edges, a patch of dings and scratches at the lower right of the wrist, some small chips at the toe, and an exceptionally crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. This is an outstanding example of a scarce Civil War era Palmer carbine, the finest example RIAC has ever cataloged, a significant piece in the development of military arms as well as firearms in general, and would make an excellent addition to any U.S. Martial collection!
