Description:

Offered here is a stunning factory scroll engraved Remington Type I (aka No. 2) Double Deringer as manufactured 1868-1888 with rare original factory box. The sides of the top barrel at the breech, sides of the frame and the back strap are decorated with fine, well executed factory hand engraved scrollwork. The top of the upper barrel rib features the two-line Remington legend: "E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION NY/ELLIOT'S PATENT DEC. 12 th 1865." The hammer, extractor, trigger, barrel release and screws are niter blue, and the barrels and frame are nickel plated. Remington offered its customers the Double Deringer with full nickel plating for $9.00, circa 1888. The engraving would have cost the customer an extra $4.00. The two piece grips are highly attractive varnished rosewood. The matching serial number is located on the underside of the lower barrel and left side of the grip frame under the grip panel. Includes the seldom encountered period correct two-piece factory burgundy colored box. The interior of the lid has the Remington "Directions for Loading" label which confirms the nickel plating. The box end label confirms the model, finish and caliber. This end label was only used from 1868 to 1888, making this box one of the earliest styles of factory Double Deringer boxes. These boxes are missing from even the most advanced collections. This stellar deringer along with its box are pictured and identified in the book "Dr. William H. Elliot's Remington Double Deringer" on page 84; however, the authors incorrectly list the serial number as 4362. The Double Deringer is the best known and best designed of all American deringer type pistols and was manufactured by Remington for 69 years. Provenance: The Greg Lampe Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 98% plus original nickel plating showing minimal handling marks and a crisp engraving. The small components retain 60% original niter blue. The grips are also excellent with a few minor scratches and nearly all original varnish remaining. Mechanically excellent. The box is very good with well done repairs. Most of the end label remains. These early boxes are rarely encountered in any condition and are a must have accessory for the serious Remington or American derringer collector. Certainly one of the finest factory engraved Remington Double Deringers we have had the pleasure to catalog. Along with its factory box, this exquisite deringer will be difficult to improve upon!
