Description:

Offered here is the finest known S&W Model One, 1st Issue, Third Type known to exist and it is accompanied by a rare Gutta Percha "Flag" case. The Third Type variation of the Model One features a spring loaded barrel catch with side projections. The included factory letter confirms the 3 3/16 inch barrel, two-tone silver and blue finish, and smooth rosewood grips. The letter goes on to state this revolver was part of a December 3, 1858 shipment for 40 units in the same configuration delivered to J.W. Storrs, New York City, S&W's sole agent from 1857 to 1869. The barrel rib has the one-line address, and the cylinder has the patent date marking. Matching serial number on the butt and both grip panels, and matching assembly mark on the grip frame, barrel and cylinder. Complete with an original S&W "Stand of Flags" Gutta Percha case. The case features an cartridge block holding a full count of 56 rounds, cleaning rod, decorative blue velvet lid lining, and red velvet lining on the bottom. These "special" cases were made for Smith & Wesson by Littlefield, Parsons & Co., who also made similar cases for daguerreotypes. They were very popular during the second half of the 19th Century and were usually used for fancy or presentation guns, most of them special ordered or added by the distributor after a gun's shipment from the factory, and are generally found with the Model No. 1, First and Second Issue revolver. The "Stand of Flags" is one of two types of gutta percha cases commonly recognized; the other showcases a relief image of a Model No. 1 on the lid. Of these two case styles, the "Stand of Flags" is the most rare. Provenance: The Joe Miller Collection; The Bill Maier Collection; The David Carroll Collection: The Sheryl Cheely Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel and cylinder retains 90% plus bright original blue finish faded to plum on the balance and a patch of pitting at the muzzle. Nearly all original silver plating remains on the frame. The grips are also excellent with a couple stress lines on the bottoms, limited handling evidence and nearly all original varnish remaining. Mechanically excellent. The case is very fine showing minimal handling evidence on the exterior and typical high spot wear on the lining. The delicate nature of these cases meant that many did not survive, and this case is definitely in above average condition. This finest known S&W Model One, 1st Issue, Third Type Revolver complete with rare gutta percha flag case will be a welcomed addition to any S&W or antique firearms collection.
