Description:

Approximately 1,000 Model 1841 "Mississippi" rifles were manufactured by William Glaze and Thomas W. Radcliff's Palmetto Armory for the South Carolina militia and many saw hard use during the Civil War. These are considered a secondary Confederate weapon. In February 1865, General Sherman's forces destroyed 500 of these in storage at the armory, contributing to their low survival rate today. Palmetto Armory Model 1841 rifles are described on pages 123-127 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III". Features traces of a socket bayonet lug on top of the barrel towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight, and fixed V notch rear sight. "COLUMBIA/S C. 1852" is vertically marked at the tail of the lock, and "PALMETTO ARMORY/S*C." in a circle around the palm tree is marked at the center of the lock. "P/V" above a palm tree proof at the left of the breech, and "Wm GLAZE & CO." (faint/partial) marked on the left flat. "SC" and "63" marked buttplate tang. Matching "63" marked on the patchbox. Mating letters "CK" marked on the back of the barrel and breech plug. Brass-tipped ramrod, brass barrel bands, trigger guard, patchbox, and buttplate. The barrel measures at approximately .58 caliber and appears to have been period bored out to smoothbore configuration from its original .54 caliber rifled configuration. File marks are visible where a top mounted bayonet lug used to reside. Includes a period white canvas/leather sling and a detailed certificate of examination from previous owner, Dr. Frederick G. Novy. Provenance: The Dr. Frederick G. Novy Collection, A Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Fair, exhibiting genuine signs of hard Confederate use, with scattered mild pitting overall, and mostly legible markings in the metal. Brass retains an attractive golden aged patina underneath an old coat of varnish with numerous dings on the buttplate. Stock is also fair as heavily sanded and re-oiled with an applied coat of varnish over top, scattered scratches and dents, numerous cracks and some absent sections on either side of the forend, a few tacked "repairs" on the right of the barrel channel, a crack ahead of the trigger guard tang, spliced/repaired sections to the right of the barrel tang and beneath the lock, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw, and some cracks around the buttplate. Mechanically fine. Absent top mounted bayonet lug as mentioned above. These Palmetto Armory rifles rarely turn up in any condition today due to their extensive use in the most important conflicts of the war, and are considered highly desirable as the missing piece to any Civil War or Confederate collection!
