Description:

The swamped octagon barrel is rifled and has an engraved swirl pattern on the muzzle, a bead style front sight, adjustable notch rear sight, "V Neuman a Leoben" signed on top, floral pattern on the breech, a peep sight on the tang, and large fence on the bolster which is designed with the nipple facing away from the shooter. The lock is signed "Neuman" and has border and floral engraving. The furniture is gilt brass and has floral and classical engraving. The side plate features a topless woman and a unicorn. An absent inlay on the cheek rest appears to have been a family coat of arms. The stock has raised relief floral scroll carving and some simple incised scroll accents. A heavy 2 1/4 inch brass extension is mounted on the butt and has a steel rod projecting below the heel, and it has a false patch box on the right. A spare nipple is threaded into the stock behind the finger groove trigger guard which encloses adjustable double set triggers. Vincenz Neuman is listed in "Der Neue Stockel" as active in Leoben, a city in central Austria, c. 1780.

Rating Definition:

Fine as converted/rebuilt from a wheellock to a percussion rifle sometime in the 19th century with 75% plus of the blue finish remaining on the barrel, traces of case colors on the lock, good gilt finish on the furniture, crisp engraving and markings, and mild overall wear. The short 19th century replacement stock has flash type wear at the breech, a crack in the butt, crisp carving, the noted absent cheek piece inlay, and mild overall wear. The front "hair" trigger post is broken, but the rifle is mechanically fine.
