Fine and Rare Cased Gilt Gastinne-Renette Single Barrel Hammer Saloon Target Pistol

This pistol is similar to a Stevens tip-up pistol, with blued part octagon/round barrel signed "GASTINNE-RENETTE À PARIS" on the top flat of the breech section and with blued bead front sight and blued fixed rear sight. Steel action finely chiseled in low relief with panels of foliage, flower heads and fleur-de-lys all against a gilt ground, the spurred trigger guard and pommel decorated en suite. Blued hammer with checkered spur, blued trigger, and checkered hardwood grips. In original leather briefcase style case lined in pig skin containing two empty 6 mm cartridge tins and a cleaning rod with brush and jag, the exterior of the lid initialed "L.E.P."

ConditionVery fine. The barrel retaining much original blued finish with some loss and patches of discoloration, the signature is clear. The action, pommel and trigger guard each retain bright borders and detailed ornament with some scattered patches of discoloration and softening of detail at the edges. The pommel and trigger have a little more edge and surface wear but the ornament remains mostly crisp and with most of its gilt ground. The hammer and trigger have suffered some flaking to the blued finish. Grips are good with crisp checkering, some blemishes to the right grip around the retaining screw. Case is good with some external scuffs and staining, one corner of the lid damaged. Some wear and staining to the lining.
