Description:

Jacob Metzger was trained in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, during the American Revolution and then moved to Frederick, Maryland. The rifled barrel has traditional dovetailed blade and notch sight and is signed "J + Metzger" on top of the breech section. However, much of the overall design of the rifle does not match others by Metzger. The lock is marked "Ketland/& Co" and has some floral engraving. The brass patch box has wavy line engraving. The trigger guard has a screw through the finial. The side plate has a fleur-de-lis style finial. The curly maple stock has molding terminating in incised scroll designs on the forend, elongated flats with large drops, scroll carving flaking the cheek piece which has a brass star inlay, incised scroll pattern ahead of the patch box on the right, and an incised line border that connects to the stock flats running along the bottom of the butt. Provenance: Frank Tallman Estate Collection, Norm Flayderman Estate, and Robert W. Gruebel

Rating Definition:

Fair. The rifle appears to be an old restock with some mixed components that has since been repaired and reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel and lock have a mix of dark brown patina and applied brown finish, mild oxidation and pitting, and moderate overall wear. The brass furniture has aged patina, a chip out of the entry pipe, and an absent patch box release button on the buttplate. The stock has some minor cracks and chips (including at the sear), and a faint repaired crack in the wrist.
