Description:

The Japanese Type 92 heavy machine gun is one of the most iconic Japanese machine guns that saw considerable use during World War II. Its very low cyclic rate of fire of approximately 450 rounds per minute earned it the nickname "woodpecker" by Allied soldiers due to the distinctive sound it made during firing. It weighs in at approximately 60 pounds without the tripod mount, and the total weapon system weighs approximately 125 pounds; intended to be fired from a tripod by a team of three men. The unusual tripod was designed to be used with removable carry poles (not included), so that the weapon could be transported fully assembled for quicker deployment. The Type 92 saw use everywhere the Imperial Japanese Army went as both an infantry and anti-aircraft gun; additionally, captured guns were often turned against the Japanese by the Chinese, with many of those captured guns finding their way into North Korean hands in time for the Korean War. Designed by Kijiru Nambu of Nambu Pistol fame, the Japanese Type 92, an improvement on the Japanese Type 3, uses the core workings of the Hotchkiss M1914 machine gun scaled up to accommodate the 7.7x58mm Japanese round. Among other changes, a lengthened set of cooling fins are integrated into the receiver, the sights are right-offset to permit use of a scope, and an integral cartridge oiler is installed in the plate feed mechanism. Blade front sight (broken/absent right sight protector) and peep rear sight (absent). The exposed section of the dummy barrel is lightly fluted, and a hand-adjustment gas regulator mechanism is located beneath the barrel. Mounted at the rear are a pair of folding spade grips and a thumb trigger with integral manual safety. Serial number "2201" (faint) marked on the left of the receiver. Includes a gray painted tripod with on-board traverse and elevation adjustment hardware, and a thirty-round sheet metal clip with twenty seven dummy rounds. Absent top cover, absent extractor, absent firing pin, absent rear sight, and absent/broken right side front sight wing. Fitted with a modern made dummy barrel that is plugged solid.

Rating Definition:

Fair as assembled, retains half of a refinished blue finish with scattered mild pitting concentrated on the receiver. Broken/absent right side front sight wing protector as mentioned above. Welded barrel nut. Some absent components as mentioned above. Spade grips are good with some mild cracked/absent sections on the left grip, and scattered chips, cracks, and scratches overall on both grips. The bolt mechanically cycles as it should, but does not have its firing pin or extractor as noted above, and the modern dummy barrel is plugged solid, rendering the gun inoperable. Included tripod is very good, retains 90% of its applied gray paint with some areas of light to moderate pitting visible. NOTE: This weapon is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
