Description:

Blued Winchester proof steel barrels with a dual bead sights on the raised matted vent rib which is marked "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER", standard Winchester markings, 2 1/2 inch wedges of floral scroll at either breech, chokes marked "FULL"/"FULL", and chambers marked 2 3/4 inches with automatic ejectors. The blued boxlock action displays near full coverage floral scroll engraving surrounding four gold inlaid game scenes in the Winchester 21-6 Grand American pattern. The left shows a setter, the right has a pointer, the underside shows a pair of pheasants, and the trigger guard has a dog's bust. The gun features a single gold plated selective trigger and a tang mounted manual safety switch with gold inlaid "SAFE". Beautifully figured, fancy 21-B fleur-de-lis checkered beavertail forend with rosewood tip inlay and engraved fittings including the rotary latch release, and a pistol grip stock with engraved blued steel grip cap, blank gold inscription plate, and leather covered recoil pad. The included factory letter confirms the barrel length, sights, chokes, non-automatic safety, gauge, leather recoil pad, and single gold trigger when the final inspection was completed on August 4, 1954. Also included is a 1976 letter from Winchester stating that this gun was retained by Winchester until 1967 and was used at various shows and was, in fact, engraved at the factory. In her included letter Winchester factory engraver Pauline Muerrle states the frame, top lever and trigger guard were engraved and gold inlaid by Winchester engraver George Ulrich and the barrels, catch plate and forearm shoe were engraved by Winchester factory engraver John Kusmit. It is highly unusual for two factory engravers to have worked on a single Model 21. In this case, a frame engraved by George Ulrich, and after his death, was used and completed by Winchester, with final engraving by John Kusmit. The fact that two factory engravers worked on this Model 21 is rare, if not extraordinary. The original factory box is also included. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .732/.732 inches; choke constriction .037/.037 inches; minimum wall thickness .022/.016 inches; 1 3/8 inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 14 5/16 inch length of pull; weight 8 lbs. 7 oz.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 98% original blue finish, 99% original gold, and minor handling evidence. The wood is very fine showing some varnish flaking scattered throughout, a few minor handling marks, and crisp checkering. The box is very fine with light storage evidence. Mechanically excellent.
