Very Scarce Documented Civilian Sale Smith & Wesson Second Model Schofield Single Action Revolver with Factory Letter

These rare civilian variations of the desirable Second Model Schofield were manufactured in 1876-77. Estimates place the number of civilian guns made at approximately 650 (see Supica and Nahas' "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" for further information). As a commercial variation the revolver correctly lacks U.S. sub inspector marks and "US" marking as found on martial contracts. Matching serial numbers appear on the butt, barrel, barrel latch, rear latch screw, right grip panel, and cylinder. Per the included factory letter this revolver was part of a March 26, 1878, shipment of 75 units in blue and 20 units in nickel and all featuring 7 inch barrels and smooth walnut grips that was delivered to Wexel & DeGress Co. (locations in New York City, New York and Mexico City, Mexico). Wexel & DeGress were major suppliers of arms to Porfirio Diaz and his allies.

ConditionFine, retaining 70% original nickel finish with an untouched smooth dark gray patina on the balance. The trigger guard and hammer have faded to a dark patina. The grips are very good with a couple slight chips at the toe, some high edge wear and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
