Very Scarce German 17th Century "Paddle Butt" Military Wheellock Carbine

The smoothbore barrel has blade and notch sights and is marked with a "P" on top at the breech. The lock has no visible markings and is secured by two screws. The furniture is iron. Wheellock carbines were used by European cavalry in the first half of the 17th century before being supplanted by the flintlock by the end of the century. Relatively few of these innovative and distinctive firearms were made for the cavalry, and very few survive.

ConditionFair. The metal has a mix of gray and brown patina and some mild oxidation and pitting. The stock is broken through the lock mortise and is loosely held together by the metal components and has some other chips, cracks, and repairs and moderate overall wear. The lock has not been tested.
