Description:

This rifle was made as a set with the pistol in the following lot by talented and well-respected contemporary gunmaker Jack S. Brooks of Colorado. A letter by Brooks included with lot states that the rifle and pistol are "masterpiece grade" and indicates they were made in the style of the Allentown-Bethlehem region of Pennsylvania c. 1810 with Getz barrels and work well with .495 round balls and .010 patches. The recommended powder charge for the rifle is 70 grains of 3Fg black powder, and it is sighted in for 50 yards per Brooks. The rifled barrel has a silver blade front sight with brass dovetailed base, a notch rear sight, "JS BROOKS 1981" signed in a silver inlaid panel on top, and a drilled vent. The lock is signed "Brooks." The barrel key escutcheons are silver, the silver wrist escutcheon is inscribed with the initials "DLM" and has some silver wire accents, and the cheek piece inlay is a silver star and floral pattern. The remaining furniture is brass, and the lock, brass, and silver have scroll and floral engraving. The patch box itself is a work of art. The full-length maple stock has very nice carved molding, incised scroll designs at the midsection, multi-step carved side drop points ad comb tip, raised relief shell and scroll carving at the barrel tang, elaborate incised and relief carved scrollwork on the left side of the butt, a contrasting edge plate on the cheek-rest, and a vent pick below. A fringed leather gun sleeve is included.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with only minimal firing, handling, and storage wear mainly on the face of the frizzen and some very slight spotting. The engraving, signatures, and carving remain crisp. Mechanically excellent. Overall, this is an exceptional work of art by one of the leading contemporary American flintlock riflemakers, and pairs very well with the following lot!
