Description:

This pistol was made as a set with the rifle in the previous by talented and well-respected contemporary gunmaker Jack S. Brooks of Colorado. A copy of the letter by Brooks with the latter lot is included and states that the rifle and pistol are "masterpiece grade" and indicates they were made in the style of the Allentown-Bethlehem region of Pennsylvania c. 1810 with Getz barrels and work well with .495 round balls and .010 patches. The recommended powder charge for the pistol is 20 grains of 3Fg black powder, and it is sighted in for 25 yards per Brooks. The rifled barrel has a silver blade front sight with brass dovetailed base, a notch rear sight, "JS BROOKS 1981" signed in a silver inlaid panel on top, and a drilled vent. The lock is signed "Brooks." The barrel key escutcheons are silver, and the silver wrist escutcheon is inscribed with the initials "DLM" and has some silver wire accents. The remaining furniture is brass, and the lock, brass, and silver have scroll and floral engraving. The lightly figured stock has very nice carved molding, incised scroll designs at the midsection, multi-step carved side drop points, and raised relief shell and scroll carving at the barrel tang. The pipe tomahawk has a coordinating haft with silver eye and star shaped inlays, end cap, and mouthpiece with light engraving and a brass head with scroll engraving and an iron/steel bit. The screw tip powder horn has nice bands carved into the tip, incised bands at the mouth and base, and a carved base plug. The mouth piece and tip section of the horn are a nice dark coloration, and the rest of the horn is lighter and would be an excellent candidate for some engraving.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall. The pistol has only very minimal firing and handling wear mainly consisting of some minor scrapes on the frizzen and minor residue around the vent. The carving, signatures, and engraving are all crisp. Mechanically excellent. The powder horn and tomahawk are also very fine with generally only minor handling and storage wear aside from the edge of the tomahawk blade which is dented. This is a very attractive set by itself and would of course pair very well with the Brooks rifle in the previous lot.
