Description:

Maynard carbines were easily among the best cavalry weapons available during the Civil War. Both sides used them and held them in high regard. Approximately 20,202 second model Maynard carbines were manufactured 1863-1865, but this is the finest example Rock Island Auction Company has had the honor of bringing to auction. Some were issued to the 6th, 9th, and 11th Indiana Cavalry as well as the 10th and 11th East Tennessee Union Cavalry. It has a pinched blade front sight, three leaf rear sight graduated for 100, 300, and 500 yards, and two boxed script "AJN" and "JM" inspection cartouches on the left of the wrist. Includes a period pull through cleaning brush, and Maynard carbine combination screwdriver tool. Provenance: The Donald Bates Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retains 97% original blue finish on the barrel with a few light scratches and a few small patches of very light pitting. Retains 90% vibrant original case colors strongest on the action with the balance lightly faded to a smooth gray patina, and a few areas of light freckling. Sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Stock is also excellent with attractive original raised grain and rich oil finish, a few small dings, and exceptionally crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. This exceptional example of a Second Model Maynard carbine would make an excellent addition to any U.S. Martial or Civil War collection!
