Blued Krupp Special Gun Barrel Steel barrels with a single steel bead sight on the concave, matted solid rib which is marked "J. P. SAUER & SON.", chambers measured at 2 3/4 inches with automatic ejectors, attractive flourishes of floral scroll engraving at either muzzle, and 3 inch wedges of floral scroll engraving surrounding a hunting dog at either breech. The casehardened, scalloped, sideclipped, boxlock action displays fantastic deep cut floral scroll engraving surrounding game scenes on the left, right, and triggerguard as well as "J. P. SAUER & SON" banners on either side. The left a trio of grouse in a field, the right shows four grouse in flight, and the triggerguard depicts a pair of mallards on a marsh scene. The underside is gold inlaid with the crest of the English noble house of Pelham including the motto "VINCIT AMOR PATRIAE", which translated to "love of country conquers". The gun features gold plated double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety switch with gold inlaid "SAFE". Beautifully figured, floral fleur-de-lis checkered splinter forend with deeply engraved fittings and Anson button release. The pistol grip stock is of the same beautiful walnut with checkered and carved flats, blank gold inscription shield, and leather wrapped recoil pad. This gun likely belonged to either the 8th or the 9th Duke of Newcastle based on its age and its bearing of the Pelham family crest. Includes a brass cornered hardwood takedown case containing two nickel snap caps, a nickel oiler, and cleaning rod. Excellent, retaining 99% original deep blue finish, 95% original case colors with some minor fading, and minor handling evidence overall. The wood is also excellent showing only a few tiny marks and fine sharp checkering. The case is very good with light handling/storage evidence. Mechanically excellent.
