This Springfield Model 1903A1 U.S.M.C. National Match rifle was built utilizing a receiver manufactured in 1934 with standard receiver markings, and fitted with a parkerized barrel marked "SA/(Ordnance shell and flame)/7 42" above a rare five pointed "philly" star. According to the online source, usmcweaponry.com, "The meaning of this 5-point star, commonly referred to as the 'Philly Star' is unknown at this time." The website also has pictures of two other known examples of "Philly stary marked 1903 rifles. No star-gauge mark on the muzzle crown. Includes an appraisal sheet that states, "This rifle was built at Marine Corp. Base Quantico Virginia circa 1948... Very rare and the only one I have seen." This rifle also includes an old empty mailing envelope addressed "M. C. S. RIFLE & PISTOL/P.O. BOX 212/QUANTICO, VIRGINIA" found in the spare hidden cavity of the buttstock underneath the buttplate (where it remains) upon describing by the writer. The barrel is fitted with the standard blade front sight and the folding ladder rear sight. It has a matching electro-stencil serial numbered "N.S." marked blue finished bolt. Fitted with a standard two-bolt walnut pistol grip "C" stock. "4391" marked on top of the handguard and on the bottom flat of the pistol grip, with a single circled "P" proof on the front of the pistol grip. It has the standard all milled components with a serrated trigger and heavily checkered National Match type steel buttplate. Receiver mounted with a Lyman 48 peep sight.

Exceptionally fine as upgraded to current configuration by U.S.M.C. armorer, retains 98% arsenal applied parkerized finish with some light handling marks. 90% arsenal applied blue finish on the bolt with some light cycling wear. Stock is very fine with defined edges, some light handling marks and dents, a patch of moderate pressure dents around the rear band spring, and crisp markings. Mechanically excellent.
