Description:

This is an exceptional example of a desirable DWM Model 1900 American Eagle "U.S. Test Trial Luger" purchased by the U.S. Ordnance Department in August 1901 for troop trials with the U.S. Cavalry. The Ordnance Board authorized an order for 1,000 DWM Model 1900 Luger pistols that were delivered in two lots; with approximately 800 shipped 26 October 1901 (approximate serial number range 6,000-7,200 range) and the remaining 200 shipped on 29 October 1901. This scarce pistol is serial number "6807" and falls into the first shipment and is listed in the book "1900 Luger, U.S. Test Trials" by Reese. Distinguishing features on these Test Eagle Lugers include an absence of German commercial proofmarks, no "Germany" export markings, a small "flaming bomb" mark (similar to but not the U.S. Ordnance marking) on the magazine base, and the last two digits of the serial number stamped on the rounded portion of the opposite side of the take down lever. This example has all of those markings/features. While the 1900 Luger performed well, it was not accepted for general issue; the lessons learned from the test would inform later pistol trials (which would culminate in the crowning of Browning's Colt 1911 as "America's Sidearm"), while the surviving 1900s would be declared surplus and liquidated at public auction, with most ending up in the inventory of Bannermans for catalog sale. The top of the chamber area is correctly marked with the "American Eagle" Great Seal of the United States, with a "flat top" recessed bolt and a "DWM" marked front toggle link. Numbering is primarily of the "commercial" pattern, with the aforementioned variant placement on the right side of the takedown lever. The safety lever is sharply checkered, with a matching numbered half-width grip safety, dished toggles with toggle lock, walnut checkered grips, and a nickel plated magazine with wood base. Also included is a 1900 Test holster; made "in house" by the Army at Rock Island Arsenal, the test holster is configured for a left-handed crossdraw, with a deeply embossed "US" and stamped "E.F.J." on the flap and "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/E.H.S." on the back.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine, with 90% original blue finish, showing bright wear on the high edges, areas of gray patina on the barrel and grip straps, and some minor dings and dents overall. 60% of the bright original straw color is present on the small parts, with strong niter blue on the sear spring. The grips are fine, with some flattening of the checkering peaks and mild dings. The very fine holster shows mild scuffing and light age related cracking, some verdigris buildup, and overall is supple with strong original stitching. Mechanically excellent.
