Description:

French Model 1766 muskets such as this one were among the most heavily used firearms by the American rebels to fight the British during the Revolutionary War. George Washington implemented a resolution by the Continental Congress to mark all of the "Charleville" muskets, such as this one, in use by his Continental Army as United States property. Maker markings are no longer visible at the center of the lock on this example. It features a "US" surcharge marking on top of the barrel at the breech (faint), on the rear of the lock, and in the stock behind the lower tang. There are also to "CO" or "GO" markings by the lower tang. It has a top mounted bayonet lug, brass blade front sight mounted on the rear strap of the upper barrel band, "star/D" marked at the top left quarter of the breech, sling swivels mounted on the middle band and trigger guard finial, and a "D" stamped on the left rear of the buttstock. Initials "IS "carved into the left stock flat. Large initials "TK" carved into the left of the buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Fair as reconverted to flintlock configuration with smooth artificially applied brown finish and brown patina overall, some scattered areas of light pitting and surface corrosion, some wear to the markings, a period repaired touchhole, replaced lock parts, and mild flash pitting. Stock is also fair as sanded and re-oiled with numerous scattered scratches, chips, cracks, a slightly undersized comb, and carvings as mentioned above. Mechanically fair. Nonetheless, this Revolutionary War era "US" surcharged French Model 1766 musket would fill an important hole in any early U.S. Martial firearms collection!
