Description:

The consignor indicated that this is a one-of-a-kind sword as it is the only one of its type known with "UNITED STATES CAVALRY" etched on the blade. Reportedly there are only 12 marked "U.S. CAVALRY." It is featured in Kevin Hoffman's eBook "Swords of Honor & Regulation: A Guide to Identification and Variations in U.S. and Confederate Swords." The curved blade is approximately 35 inches long and has 22 inch etched panels with scroll, martial and patriotic designs, including a eagle and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on the right and UNITED STATES CAVALRY" on the left. The spine has the etched "IRON PROOF" marking, and the left ricasso has "COLLINS & Co/HARTFORD/CONN./1862." The hilt is based on the Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer sword but with a fancier eagle head finial and more detailed floral designs. The iron scabbard has a browned body and gilt brass fittings with floral and geometric designs. Provenance: The Kevin Hoffman Collection; The Ron Bucholtz Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine with mostly bright blade with distinct etching, a few patches of minor staining, a patch of pitting near the top of the etched panel on the left, and minor age and storage related wear; aged patina on the hilt and scabbard fittings along with distinct designs, a visible crack in the eagle's neck, a dark brown mix of original finish and aged patina on the scabbard body along some minor oxidation, and general overall mild wear associated with age. A stunning and interesting Civil War sword.
