Description:

Gwyn & Campbell manufactured around 8,200 of the Type I and Type II carbines in 1863 and 1864 with most issued to a variety of Midwestern units during the Civil War. This one has the standard Type II markings and features. Matching serial numbers are visible on the bottom of the barrel, frame, and breechblock. Boxed script "RKW" and "WHR" inspection cartouches stamped on the left of the wrist, and small "W.H.R" inspection initials on the top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 75% original blue finish on the barrel, 70% plus original niter blue finish on the breech block, 30% plus original niter blue finish on the upper tang, 70% plus vivid original case colors with smooth brown patina and light to moderate freckling on the balance. Stock is also very fine with defined edges, a black line on the right of the wrist, a few light handling marks, and exceptionally crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent.
