This c. 1835 rifle has a rifled barrel with small blade and notch sights and groups of three asterisks ahead of and behind the rear sight but no visible signature. The lock is marked "BIRD &/BROTHERS/PHILADELPHIA" (hardware merchants c. 1833-1837) and has some simple scroll engraving. The rifle has double set triggers and is mounted with brass furniture, including a nicely engraved patchbox with pineapple style finial and coordinating toe plate with simpler pineapple finial. The stock is finished with some false figure and has some incised lines on the cheekpiece.

Rating Definition:

Very good with gray and brown patina and mild oxidation/pitting on the barrel and lock, dark aged patina on the brass, distinct engraving, and moderate overall wear. The re-oiled stock is also very good and has horizontal cracks visible across the butt. Mechanically functions but does not stay cocked, needs work.
