Description:

This is one of approximately 9,000 Richards conversion Model 1860 Army revolvers manufactured between 1871-1878 based on designs by Charles B. Richards, who was also one of the designers of the Colt Single Action Army. These revolvers were manufactured alongside the Single Action Army and are believed to have seen significant use in the Old West. This eye-catching example offered appears to exhibit all of the desirable telltale characteristics of a gun that likely went out West. The revolver has a nickel finish and is fitted with an antique grip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS COL. SAMl COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" in one line. 1871 and 1872 patent dates marked on the left of the frame. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT No 738". Matching full serial number "5738" marked on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and butt. Assembly number "493" marked on the loading gate. Includes an unbranded period Western leather holster with border designs and the initials "LAS" hand carved on the outside of the flap.

Rating Definition:

Fine and full of Western character, as if it were just carried out of the double saloon doors. 40% plus original nickel finish remains, strongest in protected areas and on the right of the barrel, with even scattered flaking showing through to an attractive smooth frontier brown patina on the balance indicative of period holster wear, with crisp markings and edges in the metal overall. Traces of case colors remain on the hammer. Grips are very good with charming age related patina, some period handling marks and defined edges. Mechanically excellent. The holster is very good.
