Gwyn & Campbell manufactured around 8,200 of the Type I and Type II carbines in 1863 and 1864 with most issued to a variety of Midwestern units during the Civil War. Matching serial numbers are visible on the bottom of the barrel, frame, and breechblock. Boxed script "WHR" inspection cartouche stamped on the left of the wrist, and small "W.H.R" inspection initials on the top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang.
Excellent, retains 85% plus original blue finish on the barrel with a few small areas of smooth brown patina. Retains 97% plus original nitre blue finish on the breech block and 85% plus original nitre blue finish on the upper tang, with some light flaking and brown patina visible on the rear sight and buttplate. 95% plus vivid original case colors remain with some light thinning concentrated on the lever. Stock is also excellent as re-oiled with defined edges, a few light handling marks, and an exceptionally crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. This excellent Gwyn & Campbell carbine would make a fine addition to any Civil War or U.S. Martial collection!
