Highly Attractive Smith & Wesson No. 1 Second Issue Revolver with Original Gutta Percha Case

S&W manufactured their Model No. 1, Second Issue Revolver from 1860 to 1868, and offered here is a highly attractive example complete with an original and sought after S&W Gutta Percha case. The barrel and cylinder have the polished bright blue finish, and the frame is plated in silver. The revolver wears a set of varnished rosewood grips. The right grip panel is numbered to the gun. A matching assembly mark appears on the grip frame, cylinder, and barrel. The barrel rib has the standard S&W Springfield address, and the cylinder has the patent marking. The original S&W Gutta Percha case features a decorative relief lid featuring the image of a No. 1 Revolver and "MANUFACTURED ONLY BY/SMITH & WESSON,/SPRINGFIELD MASSACHUSETTS." The interior of the lid features decorative red wine velvet. The bottom interior of the case is lined in red velvet and contains a cartridge block holding a full count of 56 cartridges. Provenance: The Mac McCroskie Collection

ConditionExcellent. The barrel retains 80% original bright polished blue finish and the cylinder retains 98% plus original bright polished blue finish. Vibrant original case colors remain on the hammer. Nearly all original silver plating remains on the frame. The grips are also excellent with minimal handling marks and retain nearly all original varnish. Mechanically excellent. The case is exceptionally fine showing limited handling/storage marks, typical high spot wear on the lining, and crisp relief motifs. The delicate nature of these cases meant that many did not survive, and a surviving case in this high condition is becoming difficult to find. This highly attractive S&W No. 1 Second Issue Revolver with desirable S&W Gutta Percha case will be a great addition to any S&W or antique firearms collection.
